AS PART OF BRISTOL'S UPCOMING DOT2DOT FESTIVAL ON SAT 29TH MAY, WOLFYPIEHANDS WILL BE BRINGING GERRIT STARCZEWSKI'S SHOTS OF RENOWNED MUSICIAN'S SHOES, SUCH AS PETE DOHERTY, THE HIVES, FLAMING LIPS AND MIA TO THE LOUISIANA IN BRISTOL.

Some scuffed, some sparkly, Gerit is "In search of the perfect shoe".

Gerrit Starczewski (1986) has made a virtue out of the eternal worm’s eye view of the concert-goer: the photographer is not chasing after the lips of the singers, but targets eye level with the footware of the stars.

While there are hundreds of raised arms with camera phones in the sky, he functions as a documentarian in the space between the artist and the audience, making visible the one component of the rockstar outfit far below the eyes of most of the fans. Starczewski describes the shoes as the soft core of a musician - where fashion meets psychology.
The performance and music of the portrayed can be inferred from the movements of the feet and the look of the shoes: "I am firmly convinced that a neutral observer can draw conclusions as to whether the underlying music is fast, or slow, quiet and gentle, or heavy on the beat and dashing forward, solely by focusing on the shoes and feet.”

Out of the photographer’s pit, Gerrit has been collecting soles, socks and toes by artists ranging from Adam Green to Zoot Woman, since 2005. His series "Dancing Shoes" is a tribute to the shoes in pop music, a fashionable and artistic stocktaking of today's music culture.
